Senator Ted Cruz emerged winner of the Iowa Caucus, beating Republican businessman rival Donald Trump on Monday, while Democrat voters returned both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders in a rare dead heat.
The Texan Senator Cruz bagged 28 percent of the GOP votes, while Trump and Florida Senator Marco Rubio followed with 24 percent and 23 percent respectively
If Cruz, who has evangelical voters’ support, is able to retain the momentum, he will turn the tables on Trump, who for months had been dubbed a front-runner in the Republican nomination race built around his aggressive politics of anger, billions of dollars and alarmist approach to national and international issues.
Meanwhile, Clinton and Bernie fought closely. The latest results put Clinton, 50 percent of Democratic votes, one percentage ahead of Democrat with socialist leaning Bernie who garnered 49 percent of votes.
Clinton, who faced controversy over her use of a private server while serving as secretary of state, said she was relieved at the result and looks forward to consolidating her gain.
