House Speaker Paul Ryan has denounced Donald Trump’s proposal to ban Muslim immigration to the United States, saying he will take to the court any “President that exceeds his or her powers.”
Ryan also criticized the likely GOP nominee Trump’s statement on building a wall on US Mexico border, declaring that nothing could be done without Congress’ approval.
“I would sue any president that exceeds his or her powers,” Ryan said
Ryan, who recently endorsed real estate tycoon Trump, told The Huffington Post that Trump’s statements do not echo the United States and GOP views.
“I think the smarter way to go, in all respects, is to have a security test and not a religious test,” said Ryan, who will chair next month’s GOP convention to lay out the Party’s path for November 8 election.
Ryan’s comments also reflected his dilemma as a Republican leader.
While his endorsement for Trump does not give the billionaire businessman a free hand, Rayan says he would also not be pleased to see a Democratic president in the White House in 2017.
Representing Republican thinking, Ryan has at times indicated agreement with some of the rhetoric that Trump has been raising since last Sunday’s shooting at Orlando gay club Pulse.
Despite the fact that investigators have not yet unearthed a coordinated Muslim militant group preparation behind the Orlando attack, Rayan was quick to consider the June 12, 2016 shooting as another “act of war against America by radical Islam.”
