After months of intense primary campaigning, during which he surprised politicians and people alike by garnering support of millions of young voters, Senator Sanders has said he would vote for Party rival and likely nominee Hillary Clinton in this fall’s presidential election.
“Yes,” was his response when asked categorically in an MSNBC interview on Friday if he would vote for Clinton.
“I think the issue right here is I’m gonna do everything I can to defeat Donald Trump,” he told Nicolle Wallace.
At the same time, the Vermont senator, who has been advocating ratcheting down Wall Street’s influence in politics and economic equality, rejected the idea of quitting the Democratic race, even after Clinton has amassed enough support to secure nomination for November 8 election.
“Why would I want to do that when I want to fight to make sure that we have the best platform that we possibly can, that we win the most delegates that we can?” he told the channel.
The Democratic leaders are likely to welcome Sanders’ statement as they seek to shore up unity in the Party in fighting Republican presumptive nominee, who has appealed to segments leaning toward populist and nationalistic thinking.
