Presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton Saturday was interviewed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation while Justice Department nears its assessment on whether her use of private email server as America’s top diplomat compromised any government secrets.
“Secretary Clinton gave a voluntary interview this morning about her email arrangements while she was Secretary,” Clinton campaign spokesman Nick Merrill said.
“She is pleased to have had the opportunity to assist the Department of Justice in bringing this review to a conclusion. Out of respect for the investigative process, she will not comment further on her interview,” Merrill added.
The three-and-a-half hours meeting took place at FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Citing unnamed sources, the CBS News reported the investigation into the Clinton’s use of private email account as secretary of state – also a 2016 campaign issue – is in its final phase. According to the channel, interviewing Clinton is one of the last steps before conclusion of the ongoing probe before recommendations are made whether charges should be filed.
Republicans have long been casting the issue in the political campaign as a negative for Hillary Clinton’s candidature for White House.
Meanwhile, in a report The Washington Post noted the investigation became further “entangled into politics this week after news broke that former president Bill Clinton had an impromptu meeting with Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch on her private plane at an airport in Pheonix.”
