Republican delegates at the National Convention endorsed a platform for this fall’s election Monday, incorporating Donald Trump’s contentious proposal on building a wall along US-Mexico border.
The plank, adopted in Cleveland, Ohio, for November 8 presidential and congressional elections shows a more conservative approach on many issues than seen in previous elections. It also advocates “special scrutiny to those foreign nationals seeking to enter the United States from terror-sponsoring countries or from regions associated with Islamic terrorism.”
The RNC is expected to formally nominate Trump as presidential candidate that would face Democratic presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton.
On immigration, the platform says “the border wall must cover the entirety of the southern border and must be sufficient to stop both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.”
“In a time of terrorism, drug cartels, human trafficking, and criminal gangs, the presence of millions of unidentified individuals in this country poses grave risks to the safety and sovereignty of the United States,” says the platform, echoing Trump’s suggestions.
“Our highest priority, therefore, must be to secure our borders and all ports of entry and to enforce our immigration laws.”
