Republican Party’s fissures were on display on the third day of the national convention, as Senator Ted Cruz who fought a fierce primary battle against now GOP nominee Donald Trump, declined to endorse him and instead asked people to vote their conscience.
His dramatic utterances drew boos from the crowds attending convention in Cleveland.
“To those listening, please, don’t stay home in November,” Cruz said.
“If you love our country and if you love your children as much as I know you do, stand and speak and vote your conscience,” he said.
“Vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution,” the said.
The other primary contender Florida Senator Marco Rubio also showed no excitement or keenness in backing Trump. Rubio, in a recorded message, called for coming together for November 8 Election. “It’s time to come together. It’s time to win in November.
However, some top Republicans including House Speaker Paul Ryan have supported Trump openly, and urged unity ahead of a tense fight against presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
Last week, a poll said Clinton maintained a five-point lead over Trump nationally.
