With astonishing speed, Ethiopian runner Almaz Ayana set a new world record in the 10,000 m women’ s competition on Friday in Rio Olympics.
Her Ethiopian compatriot Tirunesh Dibaba grabbed bronze by timing 29:42.56.
Kenyan Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot collected the silver medal by completing the run in 29:32.53 seconds.
But it was Ayana who pulled off the stunning performance with a clear lead over other entrants.
By halfway, Ayana has run so ahead of the pack that crossing the finish line seemed a formality for the 24-year-old athlete.
In the process, she had clocked just 29 minutes and 17.45 seconds.
Wang Junxia of China held the previous world record of 29:31.78, which she created in in 1993 .
Interestingly, countrywoman Dibaba held the previous Olympic record of 29:54.66, set when she won the 10,000 meter at the 2008 Beijing Games.
