Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Friday backtracked on his comment that President Barack Obama founded the Islamic State, saying it was just sarcasm.
He also attacked the media for seriously reporting comment.
“Ratings challenged @CNN reports so seriously that I call President Obama (and (Hillary) Clinton) ‘the founder’ of ISIS, & MVP (Most Valuable Player).” He added: “THEY DON’T GET SARCASM?” Trump tweeted.
However, his comment in an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt, appeared to suggest without any ambiguity that Obama “created the vacuum, he lost the peace.” That, in turn, led to the conditions in which the Islamic State could emerge.
“No, I meant he’s the founder of ISIS,” Trump told Hewitt. “I do,” he declared in his typical rhetorical style.
“ISIS gained tremendous strength during Hillary Clinton’s term as Secretary of State. When will the dishonest media report the facts!” he tweeted later.
At a rally in Sunrise, Florida, Trump had said. “ISIS is honoring President Obama. He is the founder of ISIS.”
The billionaire businessman continues his inflammatory statements despite suffering a string of setbacks in recent days during which he had to back out of his words on several occasions and faced stinging rebuke from Republican and Democratic politicians.
