Washington’s National Mall has a new enriching structure – combining history, aesthetics and diversity in a unique way that reflects both the American heritage and hopes.
After years of work, thoughts and devotion, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture is ready to open on September 24.
The construction on the long-envisaged project began after President Barack Obama performed the ground breaking ceremony in February 2012.
The museum will house an unprecedented mix of African American heritage in many different ways.
While its formal opening will befit the occasion when the United States has the first ever black president, one of the most inspiring expressions in the museum is a quote by poet Langston Hughes: I, too, am America.
David Adjaye, the architect, says it has been an amazing experience for him.
“I was just so taken by this incredible position. I always thought that there was this incredible knuckle. It felt like it was the joint of this really fantastic, monumental landscape,” he told National Public Radio this week.
