Islamabad has refuted media reports that Afghan American Ahmad Khan Rahami, accused of carrying out terror bombings in New York and New Jersey, is married to a Pakistani woman.
“As per preliminary investigation, the wife of Rahami belongs to Afghan capital, Kabul where she was born in1991” Nafees Zakaria Foreign Office spokesman said in Islamabad.
Rahami, was arrested in connection with a terrorist explosion in New York that left more than 25 persons injured. He was captured after a bloody street shooting in New Jersey, and has been charged with bombings, attemepted murder of two law enforcement officials and using destructive device.
In the immediate aftermath of the bombing attempts, some media outlets had claimed that wife of Rahmi belonged to Quetta, in the the South Western province of Balochistan, Pakistan.
Foreign Office spokesman categorically rejected the reports and aid that Rahami was born in Afghanistan in 1988 and shifted to America in 1995.
A section of the Press had also speculated that Rahmi might have been exposed to militancy during his visit to Pakistan’s troubled areas.
But the spokesman said that movement of Afghan refugee families from Afghanistan to Pakistan and vice versa is common as Afghans travel to and through Pakistan regularly.
