Sharbat Gula, the green-eyed ‘Afghan girl’ globally recognized for appearance on a 1985 issue cover of National Geographic magazine, is back in news.
On Wednesday, Pakistani officials confirmed that she has been arrested in Peshawar for using fake identity documents.
Gula, who is now in her 40s, from her home for forgery of a Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC), the FIA said, according to Pakistan Today newspaper.
She is reported to have been found in poession of both Pakistani and Afghan ID cards, faces charges on that account.
Meanwhile, according to the report, an FIA official said the “officer who issued the ID cards to Sharbat Bibi is now working as a deputy commissioner in customs and got bail-before-arrest to avoid arrest in the case.”
Known as‘Afghan Girl with green eyes, Gula was photographed by Steve McCurry in 1985 in a school. The portrait that appeared on the June cover of National Geographic magazine that year led to several writings, drawings and interpretation as her piercing gaze and eyes mesmerized people around the world.
