Hollywood star Tom Hanks is confident the United States will be all right, as Washington transitions from a liberal Democratic governance to the new administration of Donald Trump, backed by a huge conserrvative vote base in November 8 election.
“We are going to be all right,” Hanks said at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, where the legendary actor was recognized for his work.
“America has been in worse places than we are at right now,” the actor and filmmaker reminded Americans, without naming anyone at a time when President-elect Trump is giving shape to his administration in New York.
The actor’s remarks were reported by Vulture and The Washington Post.
The new Republican-dominated US Administration will assume charge of Washington on January 20,2017.
Although, Trump has indicated since his election to climb down from some of the election rhetoric, groups of American have been protesting his victory, while many in the immigrant communities are waiting anxiously to see what kind of people he appoints to the key positions.
Hanks explained his optimism by citing the Constitution of the United States, which guarantees fundamental freedoms and rights of all citizens.
“That document is going to protect us, over and over again, whether or not our neighbors preserve and protect and defend it themselves,” Hanks said.
Hanks recounted some of the trying circumstances Americans have lived through in recent history.
“In my own lifetime, our streets were in chaos, our generations were fighting each other tooth and nail, and every dinner table ended up being as close to a fistfight as our families would allow. We have been in a place where we looked at our leaders and wondered what the hell were they thinking of. We’ve had moments with administrations and politicians and leaders and senators and governors where we asked ourselves, “Are they lying to us? Or do they really believe in this?” That’s all right,” he said.
Hanks discounted a suggestion by documentary film producer Michael Moore that he be presidential candidate of the Democratic Party.
