Washington metro region received varying accumulation of snow ranging from a few inches up to one foot on Saturday.
In the evening temperature was plunging into teens with Sunday windchill expected to feel almost zero degrees biting cold in District, Maryland and Virginia. Newport News and Williamsburg areas received about a foot of snow.
In some areas Saturday afternoon had some sunshine, after flurries under gray skies had thrown a white sheet of snow.
Reports said slippery and slushy roads at several places saw accidents. Flights were canceled in other regions.
Citizens had been advised to stay at homes and avoid driving on foggy and slick roads. Some parts of Washington D.C. saw just a couple of inches of accumulation.
More than 70 million people are reportedly in the way of the snowstorm enveloping the Northeast.
In New York tri-state area, the first snowstorm dumped more than five inches of snow on JFK airport, and more than seven inches in Long Island.
