What happens when rhymes, chimes and art combine in a city of stars? Perhaps many things : a roaring comeback of the romantic musical comedy; Hollywood’s desire for or rediscovery and re-embrace of its being a la la land vis-à-vis harsh realities; an unleashing of multifaceted talent; a much-wanted break from a glut of the sameness, and so on.
But perhaps nothing could be more telling or persuasive than recognition of the film creativity at the people’s level.La La Land’s haul of seven Golden Globe Awards Sunday reflected that appreciation fittingly.
The romantic musical comedy scooped seven awards at the 74th event ceremony including the best motion picture, musical-comedy, best director and screenplay, Damien Chazelle, best actress, musical-comedy, Emma Stone, best actor, musical-comedy, Ryan Gosling, best original song, “City of Stars,” and best original score, Justin Hurwitz.Gosling and Stone received tremendous applause from a gathering of on and off screen artists and experts for their performances in the musical comedy.
In the drama film competition, Director Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight won as best motion picture. Casey Affleck bagged the Golden Globe for best actor-drama for his work in Manchester By The Sea.
Elle by Paul Verhoeven won two Globes as the best foreign language film and best actress-drama for Isabelle Huppert.
Host Jimmy Fallon set the tone of evening which saw La La Land domination by beginning the award ceremony with a sketch off the film. Meryl Streep received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.
Meanwhile, for music lovers it is the song City of Stars that is floating with all its sweetness into the evening of La La Land.
