President Donald Trump has asserted that the executive order on travel ban from seven Muslim majority countries is within his powers and expressed the hope that an appeals court would be able to “do what’s right.”
The president’s remarks came amid a raging political discussion and legal challenges to the Trump Administration’s order to temporarily ban entry of visitors, refugees and intending immigrants from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya and Yemen.
President Trump has termed opposition to the executive order as “disgraceful,” and has argued that the measure is not a Muslim ban but a temporary pause to determine way forward to stop ISIS terrorists from entering the United States.
A three-judge panel of U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit is expected to rule on a Fedeal Judge’s restraining order on the travel ban this week. On Tuesday, the defendants faces probing questions from the judges over the travel ban order.
“I watched last night, in amazement, and I heard things that I couldn’t believe, things that really had nothing to do with what I just read,”
President Trump said, addressing a gathering of law enforcement officials including police chiefs and sheriffs.
“And I don’t ever want to call a court biased, so I won’t call it biased. And we haven’t had a decision yet. But courts seem to be so political and it would be so great for our justice system if they would be able to read a statement and do what’s right.”
