The White House had been reviewing the issue over Gen Mike Flynn’s contact with Russian Ambassador in Washington for a few weeks before he was asked Monday to quit as National Security Adviser on account of erosion of trust.
“We had been reviewing and evaluating this issue with respect to Gen. Flynn on a daily basis for a few weeks, trying to ascertain the truth,” Press Secretary Sean Spicer said.
“There is not a legal issue but rather a trust issue,” Spicer said.
,The New York Times reported Tuesday, the F.B.I. interviewed Flynn in the first days of the Trump Administration about his conversation with the Russian ambassador during which he reported discussed U.S. sanction against Moscow.
Meanwhile, The Washington Post reported that Flynn was at a beachside resort in the Dominican Republic, when the conversation took place with the Russian ambassador to the United States.
On Capitol Hill, Democrats have called for a probe into the Flynn episode.
Last month, the Department of Justice had warned that Flynn mischaracterized his phone conversation with Moscow’s envoy in Washington.
In his resignation letter, Flynn Monday acknowledged that he had “inadvertently briefed” Vice President Mike Pence and others with “incomplete information” regarding his phone calls with Russian Ambassador Kislyak before President Donald Trumpo’s inauguration.
