The White House Thursday said President Donald Trump is not under any formal investigation over Russia or anything else.
Spokesman Sean Spicer said he is not aware of any such investigation.
“There is no reason to believe there is any type of investigation with respect to the Department of Justice,” the White House Press Secretary had said earlier on Wednesday.
The statements came after Trump accused predecessor Barack Obama of having him wiretapped during last year’s election.
The Trump White House has called on Congress to investigate Trump’s claim, and the House Intelligence Committee has scheduled a hearing for March 20.
Meanwhile, former president Barack Obama has denied any wiretapping of the then candidate Trump’s conversations.
There is no evidence for Trump’s accusation; a spokesman for Obama denied the charge, and noted it would be illegal for the president to authorize a wiretap in any case.
According to the American media, the FBI and various congressional committees are investigating alleged Russian meddling during last year’s election by hacking Democrats close to Hillary Clinton, and any possible links between the Russians involving Trump or his campaign associates.
But Spokesman Sean Spicer pushed back against such stories, saying Trump critics and reporters relying on anonymous sources are making claims that lack evidence.
“The president has made clear he has no interest in Russia, and yet a lot of these stories that come out with respect to that are, frankly, fake,” Spicer said.
“They are a series of fake allegations … There’s no evidence to substantiate any of this.”
