Snow covered the metro area on Tuesday morning as the region along with much of the East Coast saw a few inches of accumulation after a mild winter and Spring-like warming in the U.S. Northeast.
A winter weather advisory was in place until 2 p.m. Tuesday, with travel disruptions and school closures in the broader region. Overnight and early morning, the storm dumped a few inches of snow, bringing chill to the weather.
The weather conditions also caused a rescheduling of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to the White House. She will now arrive in the capital on Friday for a meeting with President Donald Trump.
Much of the winter saw unusually warm temperature and officials had predicted the middle of March to be the start of Cherry blossom peak bloom in Washington D.C.
But on Tuesday the smell and sight of snowfall gave a wintry look with District, Maryland and Virginia presented a mix of greener trees, cherry blossoms, autumn thinned branches and a blanket of white snow.
Nearly 70 million people in the U.S. Northeast are under the effect of a winter storm in the Northeast. Officials also declared states of emergency in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Over 5,400 domestic and international flights into or out of the United States have been canceled for Tuesday, mostly affecting New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport; New York’s LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport; Boston’s Logan International Airport and the Philadelphia International Airport, reports said.
In New York, all meeting at the United Nations were cancelled. “The United Nations Headquarters complex will be closed Tuesday, 14 March 2017, due to inclement weather,” the United Nations said.
Named Stella, the winter storm is blowing with with winds of up to 60 mph through some places of the vast region.
