The United Nations Security Council has condemned “in the strongest terms” Monday’s deadly terrorist attack in Lahore, emphasizing that the perpetrators be held accountable.
The statement came after a car bombing in the heart of Pakistan killed 26 including law enforcement personnel.
The 15-member Council noted that “any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed” and underscored the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts to justice and to cooperate actively with the Pakistani government and all other relevant authorities in this regard.
The members of the Council also expressed their sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims as well as to Government of Pakistan, and wished a speedy and full recovery to those who were injured.
UN Secretary-General had also “strongly” condemned the terrorist attack in Lahore in a statement earlier.
“The Secretary-General extends his condolences to the families of the victims and wishes full recovery to those injured,” according to a statement read out by his Deputy Spokesman, Farhan Haq, at the regular noon briefing.
“He supports the efforts of the Government of Pakistan to fight terrorism and violent extremism with full respect for international human rights norms and obligations,” the statement added.
