President Donald Trump Monday said the United States is declaring North Korea a state sponsor of terrorism, in the face of Pyongyang hurling nuclear and missile threats.
The move, to be formally enforced on Tuesday, will tighten sanctions against the regime and further isolate it from the international community.
“It should have happened years ago,” the president said, while terming Pyongyang “a murderous regime.”
Trump said North Korea “must end its unlawful nuclear and ballistic missile development” and end its support for international terrorism.
The announcement comes on the heel of President Trump’s visit to Asia during which he consulted China, Japan and South Korea on the threats emanating from North Korea’s aggressive statements and its pursuit of ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs.
