December 3, 2017 was the only evening, the world had the opportunity to view the supermoon during the year. And NASA made the most of it, capturing some stunning images of the supermoon on the Washington D.C. horizon.

While millions took pictures of the breathtakingly large moon, many also missed out on it. But they should not be worried as they will have another opportunity to experience the delight and excitement of the supermoon in a matter of weeks.

The two other supermoons will occur on January 1 and January 31, 2018 – during the course of one month. The two sightings will complete a triology of three consecutive supermoons on the celestial stage. The triology has generated a lot of enthusiasm among space scientists and people.

A supermoon occurs when the moon’s orbit is closest to Earth at the same time that it is full, NASA said on its website while releasing the pictures its photographers took.

Another picture captures an aircraft taking off from Washington D.C.’s Ronald Reagan National Airport and passing in front of the rising Moon.
