Authorities in New York City have identified the suspect as a 27-year-old man, Akayed Ullah, from Bangladesh, who attempted to carry out a terror attack on New York’s Port Authority bus terminal during Monday morning rush hour.
The suspect is reported to have been inspired by ISIS/Da’sh terror organization. According to media accounts, Akayed Ullah used Velcro and zip ties to attach a homemade bomb which he tried to detonate in a passageway of the bus terminal just before 8 a.m.
Akayed Ullah, who has been taken into custody, suffered burns and wounds in his abdomen and hands. He set off the “effectively low-tech device” in a subway passageway, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo confirmed at a Press conference..
Authorities said three other people also suffered minor injuries, including ringing in the ears and headaches.
According to the Fire Department of New York all of the injuries reported were non-life-threatening
“This is New York, the reality is that we are a target by many who would like to make a statement against democracy, against freedom,” Governor Cuomo said.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said there was no additional immediate threat.
“This was attempted terrorist attack,”Blasio said.
NYPD commissioner James P. O’Neill told reporters they are also looking at the Port Authority’s camera video to gather more information on the incident that happened in subway tunnel in the 42nd Street passageway between 7th and 8th avenues.
