Google search services may not be available in China but the tech giant and the rising economic power find a common purpose with the opening of Google AI Center in Shanghai – furthering advancement of technology.
The Google AI China Center, the first of its kind in Asia, joins other AI research groups the Internet giant has established in cities around the world including New York, Toronto, London and Zurich.
Beijing is keen to make technological advances as part of its effort to take advantage of the latest developments to keep pace in research and progress as a leading economy. But at the same time, it has been very protective against global tech companies making inroads into the massive Chinese market and has its own Internet platforms for the Chinese people.
“China is home to many of the world’s top experts in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning,” Fei-Fei Li, Chief Scientist AI/ML, Google Cloud, remarked in a blog, while arguing “the science of AI has no borders, neither do its benefits.”
In the blog, Li notes that all three winning teams of the ImageNet Challenge in the past three years have been largely composed of Chinese researchers.
Besides, she notes, Chinese authors contributed 43 percent of all content in the top 100 AI journals in 2015.
“I believe AI and its benefits have no borders. Whether a breakthrough occurs in Silicon Valley, Beijing or anywhere else, it has the potential to make everyone’s life better for the entire world. As an AI first company, this is an important part of our collective mission. And we want to work with the best AI talent, wherever that talent is, to achieve it.”
