The nation of immigrants may see some of the biggest changes to the immigration system in the months ahead, if President Donald Trump and Democrats find an agreement on an elaborate plan.
Under the proposed plan, the White House envisions a path to citizenship for 1.8 million young immigrants including dreamers, Congressional approval of $ 25 billion for Trump’s U.S.-Mexican border wall, round off immigration for extended family members and end diversity lottery visa program.
Trump is expected to unveil his plan next week.
But both Democrats and Republicans will have to make huge compromises on the Capitol Hill.
Democrats will have to give a lot in exchange for protection for beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, known as dreamers. Democrats have been leveraging passage of the federal government spending bill with concessions for dreamers.
Republicans, particularly, those in the House will to give up their opposition to the nod for citizenship for those who came to the United States without proper immigrant documents.
