Enduring sweltering heat, thousands of marchers in Washington D.C. Saturday demanded immediate reunification of undocumented separated families at the Mexican border as part of the nationwide protests under Families Belong Together.
Alicia Keys and America Ferrera were among speakers at the D.C. rally, joining activists and protesters in their opposition to detention and separation of undocumented immigrants under the Trump administration “zero tolerance” policy.
Amid rocketing temperatures, the demonstrators marched from Lafayette Square to the White House to press their demands. At least two people were transported to hospital for treatment under the blazing sun.
In New York, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, Democratic candidate for NY ‘s 14th congressional district, took part in a march in Queens, New York.
Ocasio-Cortez, earlier, visited Tornillo, Texas, to express her opposition to the family separation policy.
Faced with mounting backlash, President Donald Trump announced an end to separation of immigrant families seeking to enter the United States from border other than ports of entry.

But media accounts and activists say around two thousand children have been separated from families and several families don’t know where they children are and there has been no proper updates on reunification of separate families.
Last week, the photo of a crying toddler looking at her mother being frisked by the law enforcement went viral, amplifying calls for humane treatment of undocumented immigrants.
