The long nightmare for Aasia Bibi came to an end on Wednesday when the Pakistani Christian, acquitted by the Supreme Court in a blasphemy case, was released from Multan jail.
Aasia spent eight years in jail, with several under the shadow of death in a blasphemy case that has roiled the Islamic Republic.
The apex court, headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar, had absolved Bibi of all charges on October 31 as it overturned death sentencing by a high court. The Court said the prosecutors failed to provide evidence to support their allegations.
The 56-page judgement has been hailed as landmark as Pakistanis struggle to regain its progressive way of life from extremist mindset.
“The appeal is allowed. She has been acquitted. The judgement of the high court, as well as the trial court, is reversed. Her conviction is set aside,” Justice Khosa had added a separate opinion in the verdict.
