Babur Lateef, a known Pakistani-American Democrat, was elected Chair Education Board of Prince William County in Tuesday’s special ballot.
The newly elected Board Chair thanked his supporters for reposing their confidence in him.
Governor Ralph Northam was among Democratic leaders who endorsed Dr. Lateef for the Board Chair position.
The Prince William County School Board had appointed Lateef, a longtime advocate for quality education, as the Interim School Board Chair in April this year.
“I am humbled, grateful, and thrilled by tonight’s outcome! Onward and forward! Thank you all for truly leaving it all on the field!!!” Lateef wrote in a Facebook post.
Pakistani-Americans have hailed Lateef’s election.
“This is a great achievement for Pakistani-Americans. Last year we saw Atif Qarni becoming Virginia’s education secretary and now Dr. Lateef has been elected to this significant position. We can truly take pride in this moment,” Adnan Bokhari, a Virginia-based successful financial analyst and a pro-immigration activist, said.
