President Trump catapulted Kashmir dispute to the centerstage with his offer to mediate nuclear rivals Pakistan and India as he lavished praise on Prime Minister Imran Khan at his Oval Office.
PM Khan greeted the offer, saying millions of South Asian – held back by the longstanding Kashmir dispute – will pray for Trump if he helped with resolution to the dispute revolving around the Himalayan territory, partly controlled by Pakistan and India.
Trump revealed in remarks on top of his meeting with PM Khan that in a recent meeting Indian PM Narendra Modi had asked him to be an arbiter on Kashmir.
Kashmir is a beautiful name and it must be a beautiful place but now there are bombs all over it, Trump remarked, calling the situation as terrible.
New Delhi bristled at the suggestion as it has publicly long tried to frame Kashmir as a bilateral issue mainly due to Pakistan-backed militancy..
India has long faced criticism for violation of human rights and suppression of the indigenous movement. The UN recently issued a damning report documenting human rights violations in the Indian controlled Kashmir.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Khan said the issue should be resolved in accordance with aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
