UN Security Council meets on Kashmir amid hectic diplomacy, soaring South Asian tensions

PM Khan calls President Trump; Pakistan's Amabssador to the UN has been meeting counterparts

The United Nations Security Council began a closed meeting at Pakistan’ request to discuss India’s annexation of Kashmir, a move that has exacerbated tensions between South Asian nuclear powers, who both control parts of the disputed territory.

It’s after around 50 years that the apex UN body is meeting on the Kashmir dispute, recognized under its resolutions.

Pakistan made a last-minute diplomatic outreach to world leaders just before the UNSC meeting in New York.

Prime Minister Imran Khan called President Donald Trump to advocate Pakistan’s position for the rights of the Kashmiri people.

The meeting at the UN Headquarters began at 10:09 am EST under the chairmanship of Polish Ambassador Joanna Wronecka.

The UN Security Council members will hold consultations to come out with a response to the situation.
