The House on Wednesday voted to impeach President Donald Trump on both articles – misuse of power and obstruction of Congress – setting up a trial in the Senate in January 2020 at the start of the election year in a polarized political environment.
Trump has become the third U.S. president to be impeached by the House of Representatives, which voted along party lines with Democrats justifying his impeachment and Republicans calling it a politically motivated move.
The impeachment vote took place while President Trump was addressing a rally of his supporters in Michigan.
He told the crowd in Battle Creek that he has done nothing wrong and that he is impeached at a time when American economy is the strongest in the U.S. history.
“While we’re creating jobs and fighting for Michigan, the radical left in Congress is consumed with envy and hatred and rage, you see what’s going on.”
The House vote follows months of acrimonious debates at testimonies and Wednesday’s tense partisan showing. Speaker Nancy Pelosi chaired the proceedings. The Speaker who had initiated the impeachment in September was also a target of Republican criticism. Democrats made a case for holding the president to account for using the presidential influence with Ukraine to harm his political opponent at home.
