Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the world, has pledged to devote $10 billion to fighting climate change under a new plan to be known as Bezos Earth Fund.
“Climate change is the biggest threat to our planet,” Bezos, CEO of the e-commerce giant, said in the midst of criticism that his online retail giant’s commerce and shipping adds to global carbon emissions.
“I want to work alongside others both to amplify known ways and to explore new ways of fighting the devastating impact of climate change on this planet we all share,” Bezos said in an Instagram post.
In order to preserve the natural world, the fund will start funding scientists, activists and research organizations this summer, which will follow one of the warmest winters.
The entrepreneur, who previously promised to follow 2015 Parish Climate Agreement and increase use of renewable sources of energy to 80% by 2024, called climate change as the greatest threat to Earth.
“Climate change is the biggest threat to our planet.”
“I want to work alongside others both to amplify known ways and to explore new ways of fighting the devastating impact of climate change on this planet we all share.”
The Amazon chief is optimistic about stemming climate change but says it would take a collective effort.
“We can save Earth. It’s going to take collective action from big companies, small companies, nation states, global organizations, and individuals.”
