Greeting the Pakistanis on their Independence Day, U.S. Secretary of State Mike said Washington looks forward to strengthening its partnership with Pakistan in the years to come.
In a message on the occasion of their 74th Independence Day, the American diplomat noted that for more than 70 years, the United States and Pakistan have worked together on issues of “critical importance.”
“On behalf of the Government of the United States of America and the American people, I extend greetings and best wishes to the people of Pakistan as you celebrate your Independence Day,” Pompeo said as the Pakistanis marked their independence from Britain in 1947 when Pakistan and India were carved out as modern independent states.
Pompeo also expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s support for advancing the U.S. goal of establishing peace in Afghanistan under President Donald Trump’s policy to wind down the two-decades-old war. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and President Trump have been pushing for progress toward peace in Afghanistan.
“Last year, despite many challenges, we have made notable progress in advancing the Afghan peace process, and our health and economic cooperation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic is saving lives,” Pompeo said.
“The United States looks forward to strengthening our bilateral partnership by expanding U.S.-Pakistan trade and working together to protect fundamental freedoms in the years to come,” Pompeo said.
