The White population in the United States has declined to under 60 percent for the first time since the inception of the country while Asian Americans and Latinos have contributed most to the growth of the American population, the U.S. Census 2020 says.
Releasing additional details of the 2020 census including demographic changes, the Bureau noted that the non-Hispanic White population remained the largest race or ethnic group in the United States, with 204.3 million people identifying as White alone.
Overall, the data shows that there are 235.4 million people who reported White alone or in combination with another group, according to the categories.
However, a marked decrease occurred in the White alone population, with a decline of 8.6% since 2010 count.
The non-Hispanic white population has been decreasing since the start of the century, It stood at over 69 percent of the population in 2000, and 63.7 percent in 2010.
The Multiracial population jumped from 9 million people in 2010 to 33.8 million people in 2020, registering a massive 276% increase.
The Census Bureau officials said “in combination” multiracial populations for all race groups accounted for most of the overall changes in each racial category.
The growth in Hispanic American and Asian American groups represented the growing diversity of the nation.
Latin Americans or Hispanics are now numbered 62.1 million, showing 18.7 percent of the population. In 2000, Hispanics accounted for 12.6 percent of the total American population and grew to be 16.4 percent in the 2010 count.
However, it were the Asian Americans who increased their population fastest over the last decade. They are now 24 million, with a 20 percent since 2010.
According to experts immigration has been the biggest factor.
The Census reveals that 86.3 percent of Americans live in a metropolitan area.
“The U.S. population is much more multiracial and much more racially and ethnically diverse than we measured in the past,” said Nicholas Jones, director of the race, ethnicity, and outreach in the Census Bureau’s Population Division.
The Census 2020 also reports a significant rise in urban population during the last 10 years, Nearly 80% of metropolitan areas registered an increase in population.
There has been a trend in the movement of people in smaller counties larger, more urban counties.
