President Donald Trump has said he plans to encourage illegally living immigrants to self-deport by giving them stipend and airplane tickets for travel from the United States.
He drew a distinction between the ongoing crackdown against undocumented immigrants and the “self-deportation program.”
Currently, Trump said in an interview aired Tuesday, his administration is working to get “murderers” out of the country while for others not involved in crimes he would introduce a program with the possible incentive of getting some of them back in the United States legally.
“We’re going to give them a stipend. We’re going to give them some money and a plane ticket, and then we’re going to work with them — if they’re good — if we want them back in, we’re going to work with them to get them back in as quickly as we can,” Trump revealed in an interview with Fox Noticias.
This is for the first time that Trump has spoken about a planned deportation of undocument immigrants.
However, officials have not decribed any more details of such a plan and the timing of its execution.
The president indicated that he would help hotels and farms to have thee workers they need.
Trump has been working from the start of his second White House term on January 20 to implement his campaign promise on fixing illegal immigration. As part of the crackdown, the Administration has flown hundreds of immigrants to El Salvador, declaring them gang members.
The U.S. has also moved against foreign students and revoked visas including for those who participated in Gaza war protests, alleging that they engaged in antisemitism.
Some of the Administration’s actions have been challenged in courts.
