Washington area was slowly coming out of deep freeze of the past week as the sun came out of clouds at places. But the frigid look persisted with much thinner traffic on roads, still white after days of snow, than usual.
A forecast for sleet in the afternoon forced early closure of schools in parts of Virginia.
The mercury rose above freezing point after several days. The spectacle of snow on the Potomac still sent shivers as the East Coast emerged from a massive snowstorm that affected 100 million people.
On Wednesday forecasters see the temperature touch 44 degrees Fahrenheit.
