Ears are hearing whispers and music of New Pakistan…
پاکستان میں نئے پاکستان کی صبح طلوع ہوچکی
For me it’s 2nd coming of New Pakistan.
In December of 1971 I was in the 9th grade while living in Rawalpindi. There were two Pakistans – the West Pakistan and the East Pakistan.
The same year, East Pakistan was gone after a disastrous war with India and East Pakistan became an independent country named as Bangladesh, the Nation of Bengalis.
Pakistani military who was ruling at the time, after embracing defeat had no choice but to hand over the powers to a civilian and brilliant star, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.
After taking over, on the very first day Bhutto addressed to the nation and he said:
“ My fellow citizens, let’s forget the past and set the foundation for NEW PAKISTAN.”
This “Naya Pakistan” slogan is not “Naya” for me. It was uttered by Bhutto for the first time in his first speech. I’m sure my contemporary friends Anwar Iqbal Zulfiqar Kazmi Rana Mehboob Zahoor Nadeem agrees with me as well.
It’s a different story that Bhutto did great positive wonders for Pakistan and at the same time, he committed a lot of blunders as well. He was a human after all and humans are prone to making mistakes. And believe me, the PPP friends may not agree with me but Bhutto did make quite a few mistakes.
Having said that now I’m hoping and expecting something better from Imran Khan. Like President Reagan, I’m sure he shall put Pakistan as a shining city on the hill.
I didn’t get a chance to hear Prime Minister-elect’s speech. I heard from many friends that it was horrific, Imran Khan was still in the election mode.
However, I got a chance to hear Bilawal Bhutto speak. I thought, he crossed his points eloquently and with class. Some people are comparing him with his mother Benair Bhutto. I have a different take.
I heard Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto as a child when he was foreign minister. I heard Bhutto as an adolescent in the 70’s during his election campaign and I heard him as an adult when Bhutto was Prime Minister.
Bilawal definitely reminded me of his grandfather Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto with his burst and articulation.
Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was infamous for being crooked and evil genius. However, Bilawal on the outset seems like he is down-to-earth and has a genuine heart. Jury is still out for him, though.
Imran Khan should take some pointers from Bilawal for his future speeches.
Well, congratulations to all of my friends and family members from my former country Pakistan for a New Beginning. Best of Luck to Imran Khan, my cricket hero.
I was so mesmerized by Imran Khan during his cricketing days that I named my younger brother who was born in 1974, Imran Malik.
