For Pakistani-American Agha Hasnain, running a marathon is a lifelong passion that has seen him accomplish the feat of successfully completing the long run in all 50 states.
But this year, his participation in the 2017 Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon in Washington D.C., carries a special meaning for him.
“I have been all over the states, have interacted with so many wonderful Americans including veterans,” says Hasnain, who is among a group of six American Muslim athletes participating in the marathon on March 11.
Each of the six Muslim participants will run while holding the American flag – by no means an easy task.
Hasnain explains that running for miles demands a remarkable sustenance of momentum, focus and a lot of energy.
“Holding a flag through the entire length of a marathon is something I believe can only be done out of love for something — and that is what we are planning to do— we are running to show our love for America,” Hasnain says.
The participation of top Muslim athletes will be unprecedented and takes place in the backdrop of deeply divisive 2016 election season, after which according to FBI and some organizations instances of violence and hate speech against Muslims have increased. At some places, individuals have even vandalized mosques and Islamic centers with arson.
“So, when I hear news about hate speech against Muslims or arson at mosques, I cannot believe this,” says Hasnain.
“Yet, this is happening right here in America. My job is to create understanding and promote harmony through my performance as a runner.”
But all the athletes are excited to take part in the marathon with the love of the sport as well as the spirit to show love for America.
“I am Muslim, I am American I love America!,” says a message for the marathon.
“As a citizen of this beautiful country, I owe it to all communities, to future generations, to our children to show to people all over that Muslims love America the same way as other communities,” says Hasnain.
